I just bought a bottle of aqufortis from Jim Klein. After reading the posts about people not getting the results they expected I thought I better try it out on a scrap of maple from my current in progress build.

I like it!

One coat and blushed with one coat of Tru Oil to make it look a little like finished wood.

This is what I ended up doing with my stock.  I applied another coat of AF.  Let it set for 2 hours.  Heated it up hard with the heat gun. Let it sit for an hour then heated up the same coat of AF to make sure I used it up good this time. Let it set for 1/2 hour then did a neutralizing with ammonia this time. I just did the first oiling using 50 /50 of BLO and Gum Turpentine. I gave the inlets one coat to give them a little bit of protection, as I am in the north. Pics will follow. Diane, Its hard to tell from a picture, for me anyway, but based on that alone, I would give it a hard rubbing with some 0000 steel wool. I think it would enhance the contrast between the hard and soft grain. right now it looks like a stain covering both grains equally.

Before you try the steel wool, rub it very briskly with some heavy weave cloth (denim or ?) to "buff" it up - I think you will see a great difference then apply your finish -- but go very lightly with that BLO (not a fan of it but that's just me).

DONT rub it down with steel wool. Use a Scotch-Brite pad.
I've been making and selling Aqua Fortis for a few years and using it for many more and I've never heard of a Sizzle when applying baking soda. it shouldn't be that strong at that point of applying that neutralizer. That tells me one thing and that is it should have been heated much more thoroughly. I've never had to apply more than two coats because it will darken a bit over time. The more you heat it during the initial processes the less it seems to darken. Contrary, if you don't hear it enough and keep applying Aqua Fortis it will get very dark over time.

My plan is to card in between oils using a light weight canvas. i have read here about speckles using steel wool.

Well, I've done about forty using aqua-fortis, always use steel wool and have yet to find a speckle. I have heard that before, just never experienced it. The purpose of the steel wool is not to buff or polish it, but to remove a trace of material. it will take and leave more on the differing grain densities giving you more contrast between them.

I've experience speckles of bright steel under a gloss finish with a more open grained wood, like walnut.

Burlap or crumpled up brown paper shopping bags make good burnishers.

A scothbrite pad will bring out the contrast and won't leave speckles.
You will hate using store bought BLO.   It doesn't dry!!!!  You can MAKE it into a serviceable finish,  but why bother when there are sooooooo many good ones out there.

Dane:  what colour Scotchbrite do you use, and where do you get it?  I have 'green' readily available, and I use it with Comet for de-greasing steel prior to browning.

Your doing fine - don't panic - Although I am not a FAN of BLO and would never use it it may work for you :). I have used 4/0 steel wool with no ill effects (speckles) that don't mean that it can't happen as some have experienced. Understand that you are in a learning process and the knowledge that you will gather here will lead you on a path that will be right for you. Some times you must fail to get better but it looks like you are doing fine. Please show us the final product :).

Taylor,
I use the green, maroon  and the light gray.  White is just too fine, although I will sometimes use it to apply additional coats of finish.  Kind of sand and finish in one.
Locally, I get it at Woodworkers Source.  Large pads that you can cut to size.

Just ordered some Pure Tung oil. Was reading on this site about the differences in the tung oil available in stores. Not the real deal at all. The Minwax we have already says right on the can that it is for interior use only. What a joke.

Hi Diane,
Don't worry about the label "interior use only" on the finishes. It usually implies that there are no UV light blockers in the mix.  The original finishes used on long rifles would be labeled "interior use only" today.  You are right that Minwax and Formby tung oil finishes do not contain any actual tung oil but they contain derivatives of the oil to create an actual wiping varnish finish.  They are pretty good finishes for guns but do not penetrate very deeply.  Pure tung oil will take a very long time to dry.  There are products labeled "polymerized tung oil" from Sutherland-Welles and others  that are tung oil that is heat treated so that it dries very fast. Those are the products I have used for many years. With pure, unpolymerized tung oil you may want to add a little Japan drier or a varnish, which will speed up the drying and curing.
