Glueing African Black Wood to Maple
« on: April 14, 2016, 01:48:15 PM »
Hi,
Any suggestions on a good glue to hold these two different woods  together.
It is for a nose cap on a pistol.
Thank you
Fred

I am about to do black wood and walnut on a bolt gun, and will use Acraglass (because black wood has so little pore) and dowels.  For a muzzleloading pistol I would substitute a couple of skinny little carbon fiber rods for the dowels.

I made a couple pieces with ebony nose caps attached with no problems.  I made a slip joint to fit the stocks and nose caps on similar to how a cast metal cap would work.  Next I recessed some groves on the stock nose and inside the wood nose cap.  I then used Accura glass gel stained black to fill the cavities on both parts and the mating surfaces forming the line you see on the outside and glued them together.  I worked the two surfaces down together and no visible cracks between them and they have not been an issue for many years.

I would wipe down the ebony real good with acetone and use Titebond.

For the African Blackwood, do what Robby said, roughen the surface, wash with acetone.  AB is very oily, so get as much oil out as you can, and choose your glue carefully. Cyanoacrylate is probably your best bet, but you should test your materials first before doing the gun.
Best regards,
Dale

The glue is not nearly as important as a fresh, clean wood surface. If it's fresh from cutting or sanding, you want to remove the dust. Acetone is good because it evaporates so quickly, but other solvents will do the job. I used to add ebony, blackwood, teak, and bloodwood details to furniture and used "yellow glue" and cleaned the accent pieces well.
