Should the front sight dovetails on flintlock long rifles and pistols be filed down to the barrel flats. Should they be left square for sight alignment.

Aesthetically/historically it Depends on the style of rifle........ For field use I prefer filed to the barrel after initial sight alignment.

I always leave a little of the sight base sticking out for adjustment. Not a lot, just a little; like 1/16" on either side. I may file it almost flush with the barrel once I finish sighting in a rifle for myself, as opposed for a client.
