Christian Springs Carving
« on: April 20, 2016, 05:59:17 PM »
Took a couple of pictures of a rifle drying in the sun to send to my customer(along with the bill ;)).Thought I would share them here. The carving is loosely based on RCA #40 one of my favorites.

Lovely carving Mitch. It seems just right, a working gun, with some bling, not made for a king... that kind of thing.

I like this level of carving, maybe because I believe the working guns were not pieces of perfection. The carving really adds a lovely touch to a utilitarian piece. And so, I think this is just right, well done.

Mitch, I like the color of finish also. Looks very realistic as does the level of carving as Tom has mentioned. In looking at the KRA Moravian book one thing that stands out to me is most of the arms in that book are of a similar color to yours. We have so many tints/dyes options today that makers in the 17th and century 18th century didn't have.

Like it as well. Why drying in the sun. Handmade varnish?

Most of this carving was done by setting in the design with various gouges and the relieving the background as most traditional wood carving was done.I used a v tool to do the incised work as it best mimicked the original carvers work.I relived the background using a gouge, then flat chisels and finally scraping with scrapers for the final finish.

Bill
Since I started using a lot of Tried and True finish which is a polymerized linseed oil based finish I usually hang my stocks in the sun to dry.Even though this rifle is finished using Chambers oil finish out of habit I still hang them in the sun.Seems to speed up the drying time!!

Very nice carving, Mitch!  I am attending a Christian's Springs class in June and will get to try my hand at at some Christian's Spring carving in the not so distant future.  Your work is certainly inspirational!

Thanks Mitch.  Knowing which tools were used helps me visualize the process. I hope to eventually integrate more carving in future builds and seeing work such as yours helps inspire.
