Hawken-ish Pistol

10", .54 cal Green Mt Barrel, nice piece of maple, Davis lock, TOW set trigger.
All hand scraped, no sandpaper.   Ferric nitrate, ebony toner, Chambers oil finish.
Really difficult piece of maple.  But really pretty.

I'm usually not much of a fan of percussion guns of any sort, but your pistol is an exception.  Well made and the full stock really shows off the wood.  Great looking gun!

Nice neat work. Pistols are the most demanding guns to build. Every thing is in your hands when it's done. The are absolutely unforgiving of oopsies of any sort. Nice gun. BJH

Over a period of time I made and sent about 125 Bailes style flintlocks to Helmut Mohr in
Mayen/Hausen,Germany for his nice Boutet style pistols.He told me,without hesitation that
pistols are a real booger to make,even plain ones and the Boutet was NOT plain.
I have made 3 pistols and want to make no more.

That is a very nice job on that pistol and in 54 cal it is going to be a magnum to shoot but I bet it will be fun.  ;D Thanks for sharing it with us.

Mike, i couldn't agree more.  I've been working on this one off and on for about 5 years. They are a PITA to work on.  Kept putting it aside for other projects.  I don't think most people realize how hard pistols are to work on.  Nearly the same amount of work as a rifle, but in a very small space, that is very hard to hold.

That's a fine looking pistol.  You started with a good looking piece of maple (even if it is a booger to work with), and did a great job with the color and finish.  I like it!   :-)  Marc
