on a target rifle.  Are lower or higher sights the way to go to get away from as much mirage as possible and why.    jack at fort chambers.    thanks

Sights that are about twice as high as those on original rifles, ie:  about 5/16" off the barrel, will help to deal with heat mirage.  Make your rear sight with a slope to the rear so that it remains in shade naturally, and black it well...that will help keep it as clear as possible.

You heard right! I have only watched that one show and as soon as I heard him tell that I decided not to bother recording any more of the episodes.

Oh, and the other thing, did you notice when he missed the ax blade with the first shot, they got real concerned he might have a lot of work to do on the rifle if the next one missed? Sure am glad he got it with the next shot, he probably would had to work hours to fix the problem and really lost money on that rifle due to all the extra labor:D

The more I watch the show. The more I dislike it. Beginning to wonder if he actually does what he says. Also the dragged out flint ignition sequence. Plus the both eyes shut hits it every time syndrome. Oh well it is what it is.

Those boys sure like to shoot up their groceries! Maybe impoverished hill folk can only afford targets if they buy them with food stamps.
I have a feeling the TV producers had to manufacture a little extra drama, like, all is lost if I can't split the ball on the first shot and I'll have to go back and start my whole rifle over.
I'll have to say, though, that any popular TV show that gives somebody a hankering to own a hand built flintlock can only be good for the builders here.

Yes this show is a lot "hokey" but how many shows that are on TV now that have something to say about muzzle loading?? I for one can't name another. Can one  here "pick apart" what this guy does & says -- you bet - but again is there another show now on TV describing the building of any phase of a muzzle loading rifle?

If any of you have seen the TV show "The Craftsman's Legacy" episode #8 about Mike Brooks and did not know who Mike Brooks is then one could say the same thing about Mike Brooks after watching "The Craftsman's Legacy" episode #8. By the way I liked episode #8 about Mike Brooks!

I've nodded-off watching Hershel House's video making a flintlock rifle a few times but I still enjoy watching it -- it is entertainment and you are trying to learn something from the video. The TV show "Iron & Fire" is supposed to entertain the masses not teach the masses how to build a knife or rifle. Watch the show if you want to or watch something else that's the beauty of the remote control or whatever you change channels with . My "two cents" on the subject -- no need to throw stones my way - this was just a simple comment.

I watched the interview with Mike Brooks and I didn't get the feeling that I did when I watched this show. I hope the show does well, its just not something that interests me. Leave off all the hoop-de-la and it probably would be a great show.

I agree! I watched the "Poor Boy rifle" episode and while they showed him forging the trigger guard, they never showed him filing it, fitting or inletting it. They spent more time on the bees in the roof eaves of his a Dad's house ... wot the ... ?

Then the pours the chevron-design pewter nose cap and in the next scene, the stock is all finished - zero info on that process - and he's assembling it in seconds. Like a lot of politicians, the show is heavy on the promise - light on the delivery ...
