For Those Aging Eyes
« on: May 06, 2016, 07:40:04 PM »
As we all get older we wrestle with the limitations of open sights but also want a sight that's in keeping with the character of an early rifle.Thought I would post how I handled it for a recent customers' rifle.I first saw this peep sight setup on a rifle by Lowell Haarer and thought it made a lot of sense. The simple peep can be removed and by using a different supplied tang bolt ,knocking out the brass plate and installing an open rear sight(which I supplied also) all evidence of the peep is eliminated if the customer so chooses.

Looks like a fine solution all the way round Mitch. Do you have any closeup pix if the sight?

This side view is the only other decent pic of the sight I have.It was raining out so I did'nt get as many photo's as I would have liked before I mailed it.

That is a great set up Mitch. I have had to go to the peep sight myself so I know how beneficial they can be.

Mitch,
Great idea and execution!

The peep on the tang appears, in the photo, to be slightly right of the tang center. Optical illusion or done on purpose? Can the rear sight be adjusted for windage or only by drifting the front sight?
Thanks for sharing the photos!

That's awesome.  That right there is the kind of stuff that makes the ALR site so great.  You won't see in any of the books!  ;)

That is Really neat, I like the idea. Is there a basic set-up/measurement to get started with. Like put on a rear sight and then set the peep up to site through all three, then remove the rear? Or maybe just leave the rear? I probably asked this wrong.

Nice job. I can relate to the eye thing!
Now show us the rest of that rifle!

Looks great.  I think that's where I'm headed, these 60 year old eyes struggle to focus using common sights. I've always preferred a peep anyway.

Not to draw away from the creative work on the peep sight, but...that rear tang carving is really eye catching. It all works together. Excellent Mitch.

Thanks everyone,as I mentioned i can't take credit for the idea as I saw it on a rifle by Lowell Harrar. Now that I've tried it I'm seriously considering making one for my rifle.

ScottH
It must be optical illusion due to the angles I was taking the photo's to avoid glare.Windage is adjusted only in the front sight. The front of the peep sight sits in a slight notch in the tang so it can't be jarred sideways.

Tim C
I installed the regular front and rear sights and then used a straight edge to find the center of the peep hole.Should get the customer close enough to start.I left the front sight plenty high for adjustment.

James
Here are some more photo's of the gun.It just a Chambers Edward Marshall that I threw together and carved up for a guy in New Hampshire :) !!

I like the set up and the rifle. The sight/vision problem has been with people since day one and it probably wont hurt to remind everyone to take care of your sight/and health in general. For those with type 2 diabetes and the risk of other sight issues the use of eye vitamins might be ok.
