Silver Tobacco Boxes
« on: May 03, 2016, 03:14:16 PM »
I recently completed a run of sterling silver tobacco boxes, proper for any gentleman's shooting bag  ;).They are based on several extant 18th Century examples and measure 2 3/4- 3 1/2 " across and about 1 3/8" high. The one featuring the lion is based on a box of English manufacture, the horn and silver ones are based on one in the Winterthur collection thought to be made in New England. The Rabbit box is a bit of a fantasy for a good client.

Those are really neat, the Lion looks great but that Rabbit is over the top (No pun intended)

Very well done Mitch! Hey, did you see that engraved oval, brass tobacco box on Greg Shipley's facebook page he found on a Shawnee village site in Ohio? When you view the box you see engraved figures, but when you rotate it 180 degrees you see those figures have changed to different figures. Pretty clever engraving.

Stunning, creative and the rabbit is even sort of light-hearted too. Great mix of work, and a useful little item too.

I don't think I can go without one of these.  THanks Mitch!

Love these boxes, especially the rabbit. 😀 Are those tight enough that they could be used for "wet" patches in a possibles bag?
An idea for the next one - how about a leaping Moravian stag image?
Best wishes, Marc

Very nice Mitch. The rabbit is my favorite also. Mad River Canoe Company has a Rabbit smoking a pipe as their logo and often wondered what it meant. Inspired by your little box I had to look it up. It's a nice little legend.
I really should make time to visit you, perhaps after I get all my boats launched.
