Painted Horn With 6 Rings
« on: May 24, 2016, 12:52:03 AM »
Dang that first Pic is almost full size! In the flesh it is almost 13 3/4" around the outside curve. The Walnut Butt is 2 1/4", hollowed out about 3/4s its length to reduce weight. It is held in place by 4 pins. The two part tip is Whitetail antler, held together by 3 pins and to the horn with 3 more. Each Ring was heated in boiling water and pressed on, then secured with 3 pins each.
The color is "Sea Green" made up from Powdered Milk Paint mixed 1 to 1. Steel wooled, 0000, between the 3 coats. Then a couple of coats of Brown shoe Polish, All done before the Rings went on.

Wonderful color Tim. I wonder how permanent it will be. I guess time will tell.  I would imagine there were painted horns like there were painted guns.  Well done.

Very nice. I saw a painted horn on ebay awhile back, it was a blue one that they said was a revolutionary war era horn. I know nothing about how legit the horn was, but it was different. I wondered what the paint was, maybe it was a milk paint too.

I'm curious, what do you do with all the horns you make, do you sell them? You sure turn out a lot of them.

Tim, A great example of a powder horn rarity.  The few painted horns that I have seen had flowers and hunting type scene's on them and I can't see why some wouldn't of had solid color covering the horn.  Nice job as usual!

personal preference - not criticism but would love to have seen it with no rings or just two well placed. my taste is in the less is more arena. shape, color and artistic appeal is a home run.

Thanks for the Positive comments. I have done about a half Dozen painted horns but have not heard back on the ware issue, I would think I would or would hope so.
I have seven more Ringed horns in progress, I will probably paint at least two more and they will have fewer Rings on them.
Rick, I posted this painted horn sometime ago, I think its similar to what you are talking about. Carla painted it.

I really like it Tim.

I think that one will only get better with age, use and wear.  The blue will wear between the bands and still show up against it.  I'll bet it'll have great character.

That's a neat and understated color when you got the finish on there.

I don't recall ever seeing 6 rings.  I think you win the competition!    :D

Carla's hand painting shows that she is very talented to go along with lovely.  You better keep her.

Best wishes,   Marc

Tim, I've never seen a colorful painted horn like Carla's before. Quite striking. Was there a particular place and time that those were made? A particular culture? The design and color says German to me.

On the first horn I was thinking that the six rings were a little over the top, but then I thought "That horn will never slip out of your hand." It's an interesting look.

I was thinking Tole Painting when I asked her to paint it, as in a German/PA style and just let her go. I have only seen two originals with painted designs. One is in Grinslade's
Powder Horns Documents Of History and shows a hunting scene. The other had a vine with leaves on it wrapped around the horn.
 Something different for sure.
As for the number of rings, I have seen originals with 5 or the ghost rings were they once were. When I was setting it up it just didn't look right with 5 and the strap would have had to go at the base of the tip. So I added one more that is a little thicker than the others with the idea that it would be used to hold the strap. I think it also makes the horn balance out better.
