Thank you Mr. Brooks.  Always very helpful.  I have an image of one of those from your site, but not the other one.

I should be starting on one myself.  I've opted to the wheellock converted to flint TRS has so the stock will be a little different to accommodate the lock as well as the length being shortened to a carbine.

Ok, I have done a bit more shaping.  The overall width of the butt is just over 2 inches.  I figure after I get it all done is will be right at 2 or just under.  It feels really good and feels much lighter than it looks.  I have not done any shaping forward of the lock.  I have gotten the side plate in.  I based it off of the original which took up the majority of the side plate panel.  I was hoping to get a lot done this coming week but I broke my trigger guard trying to bend it to this shape.  So there should be another in the mail coming to me soon.  I do need to move on to ram rod pipes so I guess that is where I will go next.

You will notice a slight bit of cast off.  That was not intended, so lets just call that a happy accident and move on with our lives.

Its looking good, on mine I am planning on constructing something similar to this.  The difference is the lock I ordered (TRS) is a wheellock converted to flint. If you have any information on anything similar to these I would love to see it.

Ok, here are some more photos.  This is the first full dress rehearsal.  There is some tweaking to be done.  But for the most part this is it.  Right now it weighs in a 7 pounds.  I am playing innie Minnie minee moe with distressing the stock "Mike Brooks' style" but will wait and see.  I have my stain picked out.  So once the tweaking and the clean up are done we should be ready.

I have a couple of architectural nits to pic. #1 take about 1/8" of wood off at the muzzle, you have it right at the muzzle now and needs to be cut back a bit. #2 There should be a taper from the points of the rear lock panels to a point near where the comb starts, your taper is backwards right now. #3 Oval the shape of the buttstock a bit when looking from the rear. Yours is too square. You want to creat the illusion that the buttstock is square with out actually having it square. Looky again here for reference.

I have zero expertise on club butt fowlers, so take this with a hefty grain of salt...

To me, the wrist looks a bit fat.  I looked at Mike Brooks' pictures, and the wrist was skinny like a long rifle.

Cheers,
Norm

The  gun I pictured was a big gun. The wrist at it's smallest was probably at least 1 1/2".

The wrist bothers me too.  The problem is that it appears to be the same proportion of the original I am looking at.  Right now the wrist if 1 3/4 thick.  I think what I will do is address Mr. Brooks' comment on the lock panels and the comb, that will slender those dimensions some and that will adjust the wrist accordingly.  And we will see what we have from there.

Thanks,

Coryjoe

1 3/4" wrist would be fine if your barrel breech is about 2 1/4". Just to clarify, the wrist at the comb should probably be somewhere around 1 1/2" to 1 5/8". The wrist at the lock panels should be somewhat larger than that and taper towards the wrist.
What is you barrel breech dimension? Pert near all of the gun depends on the size of the barrel.

I did quite a bit of work last night and I have the wrist down to 1 5/8 in the rough. I still  need to oval the butt some more.  I was going to post images of the progress, but me and photobucket are not getting along apparently.

Here are some photos of where I slimmed it up.  It does not look like I did much until I put the trigger guard in place for a reference.  It looks better and feels good.

First couple coats of finish

After several coats of stain and oil, here we are.  I decided not to rough up the stock (put dings in it) but I also was not too careful about getting all the tool marks out of it.  I hope to give it a test drive this weekend.
