Interesting and Different "Accouterment"
« on: July 09, 2016, 11:46:52 PM »
This is a 19th C. American "shingle" or Trade/ Advertising sign likely to have been hung under a front porch roof or inside of a Gunsmith shop. It was carved from a single block of wood except for slight additions to widen the stock at the grip on both sides as well as the hammer and trigger guard. 38" x 14" x 4"

This reminds me...I once built an enormous underhammer gun around a 54" x 3" x .100" bored octagonal barrel.  I stocked it with a simple butt stock which carried a butt plate that in itself weighed seven pounds.  It's owner eventually sold it to a gunsmith's shop in Washington state where it hung over the door as a sign...circa 1980.

Art is not an object.  It is the excitement inspired by the object.

What a find! A few years ago, there was a auction of a long time sporting goods store near Cobleskill, NY which had a large wooden rifle hanging as a sign for years. The first time I saw it was about 1962 and it had obviously been hanging for years before that. I believe the hammer price at auction was $4,000. By comparison with this sign it was crudely made, basically just a silhouette about six feet long as I remember . Thanks for sharing it.
