I made a iron nitrate stain and let it cook for about 2 weeks. I tried it yesterday and the wood turned almost black to a dark gray color. I tried steel wooling it back but didn't work. Do I have the mix wrong? Tim

I had the same results. I added more water and it worked beautiful. I started with a 3 to 1 mix, water to acid and ended up about 6 to 1.

Wet the wood to view it how it will look when the finish is put on. Color can be deceiving. Also, you can wet sand it back to lighten it up.
