Proper way to tie strap to horn
« on: July 13, 2016, 11:35:30 PM »
Just received this fine horn strap from Tabatha Currier.  Now I would like to affix it to this buffalo horn.  Any suggestions?

Great question.  I've been pondering the same thing.
If it was easy, everyone would do it.

Obviously braided straps are harder to attach than a single lace/strap. One way is to take the loose/unbraided section and braid a short, Three or Four Plait braid, this is for the neck if the Butt has a Staple in it that is easy. Then you can continue the braid around the strap ring  it needs to be Braided tightly. The excess Plaits can be trimmed or braided back in.
The other option is to just tie four of the threads around the neck ring in a series of Square knots. Google Macramé and you will find some examples.
In some case the Architecture of the horn will have a Lot to do with how a strap is attached.

Yeah...I'm interrested in this, too. That is a nice looking strap you've got there. I've been in this same quandary  since last year. I've tried several ways including braiding the ends and I haven't been very happy with any of my attemps. It looks like the strap ring on the horn is mighty close to the spout and your gonna end up with a big wad of knot/cloth right at the buisness end of your horn. I couldn't keep the strap from coming loose no matter how tightly I tried to tie it. I ended up adding a staple to keep it from sliding off and it does, but I don't like the knot.

I usually just cut the excess thread off and sew on a leather tab to attach to the horn. Then spout end can be pushed through a hole in the leather on to the ring and the plug end just needs a tab through the staple and sewn back on itself.

Hey guys, Jerry told me of your questions and thought I might be able to help out. As Tim said there are lots of ways to attach a woven strap. I'll post some pics here of some ways I've done it before. If you want to look at more pictures, my Facebook page(Kris Polizzi Custom Weaving) has more.
The first photo is a horn by Master Horner Carl Dumke. The fringe is braided and tied directly to the horn.

The second is a horn by Ron Hess. Here I've attached leather labs to the end and used a single, thin braid to tie it to the horn.

The third horn is by Gus Taber and is also braided, but the braids are wrapped around and secured above and below the horn itself with a separate tie(I often use plain or waxed linen). I find this way a little easier to tie and more versatile(easy to adjust or untie).

The forth is a horn by Ron Trammell and is tied with the loose fringe using the technique I stated above(tied above and below the horn). I find that if you put something solid to press the horn against, it's better than just running it up into the woven strap.

If anyone has any questions, I'd be happy to help. If you're going to Dixon's, I'll be set up right next to the HCH table. I'll have 130+ straps to look at or you can put in a special order(or just stop and ask questions  :)) Thanks - Kris Polizzi aka Mrs. Jerry P

Kris beat me to it!  All of my straps are by Kris, and she is super (just to clear that up, up front).

I have mainly had Kris braid the ends of the straps into 5 or six tassels.  The Ron Hess horn above is the  exception, where Kris added leather tabs for me.

I tie a knot from two of the center tassels, and this knot ends up above the horn.  The two tassels are then wrapped around the throat or the knob, and another knot tied on the bottom.  The knots above and below add strength in my opinion.  They don't seem to come loose.

Here is my bison horn from Tim Crosby with one of Kris' straps.

Hope this all makes sense.  Best wishes,  Marc
