Turnvererin society buffalo powder horns
« on: September 29, 2016, 08:02:19 PM »
Does  anyone have any information about  the Turnvererin  Society of St. Louis in the eighteen hundreds.  I am particularly interested in  awards they made in shooting competition and who might have been the recipient .  I am aware of two ornate buffalo powder horns with silver and what I assume is bone trim.  At least one has a screw tip. Not sure about the second.  Has anyone seen other horns like this....... Louie

I personally don't know a whole lot about these societies other than reading about them in the past for some local research. Davenport, Iowa, also had a large and active German population. The German American Heritage Center, call (563) 322-8844, might have some information that would be helpful for you. I've always had great response contacting the Missouri History Library & Research Center in the past. Their archivists have been quick to respond to my email requests. I got copies of original documents relating to the American Fur Company from them promptly and with minimal fees.

I am the Lead Historian/Firearms Specialist at Rock Island Auction Co., but I am here out of my own personal interests in muzzle loading and history.

Was the Turnvererin Society related to the Turner society of Germany who were active in the early to mid 1800s?

What are/were they, what was their purpose? Looked up "Turnvererin" but the definition given was:

"an athletic club, especially of gymnasts"

  This may be closer:
 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turners

Just wondering, I would like to see examples of the horns.

TC, No I had not seen that. Did several searches and found very basic info.
Tim, The way I understand the society and I may be wrong..They started out as group of gymnast and then added other talented people in other fields. I found one group photo. About half of them had rifles and the remainder did not. I am assuming the horns were shooting awards????
