Another lock assembly tutorial
« on: October 12, 2016, 01:44:44 AM »
In the interest of education, and not wanting to hi-jack Gregg's great tutorial, I am posting a link to another tutorial on assembling a lock from a kit.  This tutorial is for building a Manton V pan.  Even though this is a different lock, the information is invaluable for any person brave enough to take on the challenge of putting a lock together from castings.   http://www.ctmuzzleloaders.com/ctml_experiments/mantonlock/mantonlock.html

Dave,

This is very nice tutorial, and the operations are very familiar and similar to the ones I am writing about in my Dolep lock tutorial. I picked up several useful tips from this one!
Thanks for posting.

In the mid 1990's I think it was that "Bud"Garrott" from Bethpage,Tn. had the Rifle Shoppe send me a left and right
pair of these Manton locks with the cast internal parts. I sent the internals back to him and told him to return them to
TRS for credit. I made these locks with precisely fit, bench crafted components and I haven't seen them since. The
original parts as made when these locks were new seemed flimsy and I know they didn't have the high quality materials
we have today.I won't accept these types of jobs now for any reason.

Great job Dave and thanks for posting it. I appreciate your efforts and for those of us that may want to attemp to build a lock one day. I am glad to see that some are willing to share their knowledge instead of just talking about it. :o

Again great job.

I bought those Manton locks from Bud and had Rod Gates make a double Manton style shotgun utilizing those locks. They function fine and give the shotgun an authentic look. Tim Cosby

Tim,
There was another pair I made for Bud but they weren't Mantons.
I remember one that had a gross flaw in the bolster that showed up when
I miller a gate off of it.
I am glad to hear the ones you have are still working and also glad I didn't
try to use the internal parts that came with them.
