Joseph Brazier lock
« on: November 08, 2016, 06:04:20 AM »
Found this on the net today.  A friend in the UK checked with Helston's for me about some of the details of this lock.
The 4 3/16" plate length measurement is accurate.  Tumbler does not have a fly.  My guess is that it was originally for a Officers pistol. I have never seen a British rifle with out a fly in the tumbler.

Not sure of the actual markings inside the plate but the text of the ad implies "Joseph Brazier Ashes", if this is the case the lock would be the highest quality.  Lesser quality locks are nearly identical in appearance but are marked "I.B." or "Jos. Brazier".

This would be a great start for someone desiring a high quality percussion lock.  Not very usable as it is because of the plate size but making a new plate would be fairly simple along with 4 new bridal screws and a sear spring screw.  Surely the existing screws are some obsolete 55 degree thread.   Price at current exchange would be about $225 USD plus shipping.

$225 is a bargain and that lock shows a fly.

Yes, the lock is a real bargain for someone.  My friend did inquire with Helstons and the tumbler does NOT have a fly.  If it did, the lock would be on the way to my mail box.

I owned a fine cased W.W.Greener 16 bore double rifle with Brazier locks that had no fly.
It also had two sets of shotgun barrels and all normal accessories normally found with these
fine guns including a mould that made a Greener Patent Bullet.
Can you send the picture of this lock to me at <bobroller@frontier.com>??  I'd like to add it
to my collection of photos.

Bob,
I do not have actual pictures on my computer, you can perhaps get the picture from Helstons link I included in the first posting.

Not sure if this is what you are looking for, Bob Roller. It's the image from the Helston Gunsmiths site.

This is the one and I still see a part of a "V"cut and a fly in that lock.
Thanks Keb and Dennis.
