Pistol case plans
« on: November 14, 2016, 10:14:25 PM »
I've recently built a Hawkenish pistol that appears to be a potentially great shooter.  Just won first place in our club rendezvous with 55 out of 60 in my first outing.
Now I need a box to store and haul it in.
Does anyone have plans for building one.  I could wing it, but know I would waaay over build it, guessing at the dimensions.

Any ideas?

Dane

Hi Dane,
A typical case for a pair of English duelers had internal dimensions of 7" x 17" x 2 1/2".  The case for a single pistol could be a little smaller because the gun can fit diagonally in the case rather than the barrel being parallel to the long dimension.  Cases were usually made of mahogany or oak.  Boards 3/8"-1/2" thick are plenty for the case.  If you have any interest in it looking historically correct, 2 stop hinges would be used (not piano hinge) and a standard single bar case lock.  The case would also have external hooks and loops or studs to hold the lid down along with the lock.  In case you haven't seen it, I did a 5-part tutorial on building an historically correct English pistol case.  It starts with this link:
