Starting my second build after 50 years
« on: December 14, 2016, 09:07:49 PM »
I am about to start a Lehigh style longrifle in a few weeks after the Xmas activities are over. My first build was in the early 60's putting together a DGW works Tenn style rifle. I had no instructions other that several small pages that came with the kit and it did require inletting the lock. buttplate etc. I had only a vague notion of how to inlet the percussion lock and could never get it to hit the nipple correctly. It did work and that old Belgium barrel was very accurate.
This time around i am accumulating all the instructional materials that i can. I believe I can salvage the original trigger guard and thimbles. I am amazed at the variety of instructional materials available now that cover every aspect of the work that gave me so much trouble back then. I am starting with the barrel, stock and lock.

Treebeard welcome to the forum. There are a lot of talented people on here. Not me, but don't forget to ask questions if you need to. My only 2 cents is pick your style an stick to it. Don't change it at mid build. Don't ask me why I know this! Lol  Good luck in your build. Oldtravler

Treebeard,
Realize that your triggerguard and thimbles will NOT be right for a Lehigh.
Probably not the best build for your second.  Getting a Lehigh right is a more advanced build.
Try a little easier build would be my suggestion.  Maybe an early Lancaster.?!

Thanks for the input Smallpatch and oldtravler61. What I have is a Lehigh stock that is pre inlet for L&R Lock and swamped barrel. Both lock and barrel came with stock. Final inletting of the Lock, barrel, trigger, buttplate and side plate and thimbles remain for the stock work. Since this stock is pre carved as a Lehigh style I will leave it that way.
I like the Lancaster style and would have preferred it but acquired this set because the price made it attractive to get back in the game.

Treebeard,
Stay with the Lehigh then,  but please use the right parts, and study the nuances of them, before you start removing wood.  They ARE unique.
