Another Banded Horn
« on: April 13, 2009, 10:00:35 PM »

Here is another banded horn. The bands are a little thinner and narrower than the last, there no rings on the base and the antler tip is of a different design. It is about 14" around the outside curve, about 2 3/4" across the base and the tip is about 2 1/2" long. The base is cherry and the bands are pined on.

Tim,
I really have a spot on my heart for banded horns and yours are top notch.  That's some really nice work. I love the mellow color. Thanks for sharing the pics.
Ken

P.S.  Is it a for sale horn or commision piece?

That REALLY is a sweet looking horn, and I also admit I have a soft spot for those banded horns.  Like Ken, I'm curious - is it for sale or was it a commision?

Awesome work, I did not have a full appreciation for banded horns until I started making them.  I do now and that is good work.  May I ask, how did you patina the antler tip?  All the methods I am familar with turn them yellow which I do not like.

Thanks for sharing the work with us.

Tim,

As always, very nice work!  How and where will the straps be attached?

Coryjoe,

I am not Tim, but I have done quite a few antler screw tips and applied tips.  Many times you can just leave them their natural color or you give them an application of leather dye or Wood stain.  Leather dye gives you a whole range of colors to work with.

Randy is right about the leather dye, I used oil based Saddle tan on this one. Wipe it on and quickly wipe it off until you get the color you want, for me that is one time
As to the strap the base plug has a finial on it and the upper strap would go just below the first band, it seems to balance out well there.
 Glad you like it.

Tim,
I really like this horn. I think you go the proportions of the band sizes right on this one. I just looks right.
Nice job.

I think I'd put a staple about an inch down from the junction of the antler and horn.

Very fine horn Tim.
