where to find webbing?
« on: January 07, 2017, 10:58:22 PM »
My daughter is interested in making some possible bags.  She would like to use webbing for the shoulder strap.  The only webbing we can find at craft/fabric stores is either lily white or nylon.  It seems to be the same for my internet searching capabilities.

Where can we get that nice looking strap material found on the nicer shooting bags?

Also I am having the same trouble finding webbing for canvas tent repairs.  Any thoughts?

Search for hemp materials and fabric. I use hemp webbing on some bags and it wears well, looks good and is easy to sew to.

If you type "hemp webbing" into Bing you should get quite a number of sites that will sell you strap material. Only problem is that they charge an arm and a leg for s/h as a general rule, and never seem to have certain widths in stock. Amazon has a rather limited selection with reasonable shipping rates.

I have used the cotton "lily white" and dyed it to suit my whim of the moment. Dyes easily with Rit dye and the webbing holds up well for me.

The white cotton can be toned down by boiling in strong tea. Try a little scrap and see if it suits you.......Bob

Learn one more skill - weave your own.  It isn't that hard and you can make it from whatever yarn and color suites you.  I would suspect a young lady might find that a satisfying project.  Probably several members on here can point you in right direction to get started with that.  I make my own using a inkle loom.  ( But some of the historically correct guys say this isn't the correct way - but then neither are several other things seen on bags.)

I've bought some things from turkeyfoot several times. Super nice people, and they have lots of goodies. I'm amazed by the breaking strength of their hemp rope.

The last time I was in Hobby Lobby they had some very nice HBT and striped webbing for cheap prices.

I buy my webbing from Jas. Townsend and Son, Inc and either use as is or dye it.

FWIW---I got my webbing by doing a search for webbing on the web. Ended up buying hemp. Came fron some outfit in California. After a lot of research and a visit to Valley Forge to look at originals I determined that plain/basket weave was as close as I was going to get to period webbing for the colonial cartridge boxes i was making at the time. What you find in a lot of cotton webbing, and hemp also, is a twill/chevron which I have never seen on a period box or shooting pouch. Also difficult to find cotton webbing any wider than 1 inch whereas  some of the hemp I have is 1 1/2 and I believe it is available up to 2in.
