relief carving

 has anybody reliefef carving with a cnc carving machine or done any engraving with cnc engraving machine ?

I have not seen a longrifle decorated in this manner. I would say the degree of perfection in itself would give it away. Guns made with a lot of modern power tools tend to have a sterile look. The hand work with its little imperfections is what makes longrifles special. Very few old masters were trained in ingraving, or wood carving, by anybody with formal training. They learned as apprentices, and unless they were extremely talented rarely exceeded the level attained by their mentor. This is why you will virtually never pick up a mass produced longrifle and think" I wish this thing could talk".

I know there is no purity in the methods we use to reproduce our historic firearms, but does anybody else feel that even the suggestion of CNC decorative carving and engraving is just going too far?

I agree Mark,but folks here seem to be worried about perfection in the carving,that sterile look.Its going to be a whole new ballgame when an original is scanned and reproduced

   Not going into the CNC issue. But I'm with Mark. As a friend once said. A hand made item has soul . I'll leave it at that.    Oldtravler

I guess it is a step beyond wax/casting, or investment casting, but not much, considering the difference between the modern casting and sand casting. CNC is simply the next step over handcarving, which hasn't changed.
