2 bore - anyone game?
« on: April 08, 2009, 09:22:13 PM »
Well, for those who think their .62's kick with 80gr. of 2F - try a ball wayyyy over 3,000gr. and 400gr. of 2F powder.  Well over 300 pounds of recoil - should roll a bit with the punch!  Looks like more fun than I'd like at this stage of the game - now, if i was 30 years younger- zoweeeeee - what a moose rifle!

I should have noted, this is the 2 bore, built by Steve Zhinn for Bigdog from nitroexpress forum.  Steve does exceptional work - and especially on English Sporting rifles in Purdey's best fashion.

That doesn't need a stock:  it needs a gun carriage!

The 2 bore has a bore of 1.326inches. The ture weight of the ball is of course, 1/2 pound at 8 ounces or 3,500grains. The balls big dog and his friends are shooting are 3,335grains - pretty close.  This gun has a 1.5" bore and we shoot a patched 1.4" WW ball. With a mere 400gr. of 1F, it rocks back on its wheels in grand fashion. You would NOT want to put your shoudler against the caskebell when it is touched off. Taylor, doing the aiming. Yes, ti's a big gun for only a 1 1/2" bore, but fun to shoot and we won the cannon event last August at Hefley Creek Rondy.  At about 120yards, we had 8 out of 10 shots in about 8".  2 cut patches on loading resulted in flyers out of the group.

I might shoot a 4 bore once or twice just from reading Selous and Baker. But a 2 bore does not appeal to me. I tend to draw the line at 458/470 class modern stuff. Unless "in practice" even these relative pop guns require a lot of concentration to get hits.

Few on this earth can shoot a .460 or .378 Wtby well (86 pounds recoil) - without flinching - now - multiply their nasty recoil by 4 times and you have just fired one shot from the 2 bore. Even a 4 has 2 1/2 times the .460's recoil.  With a full load, the 4 bore comes back with about 220 pounds of recoil - roughly 100 pounds LESS than the 2 bore.  If that doesn't mean much to you - look at a .577 Nitro Express of buffalo and elephant crushing power - it's only 160 pounds of recoil - the 2 bore runs about 350 pounds.  That would be like strapping 2 .577's together and shooting them at the same time - my head hurts just thinking of this - my shoulder departed my body at the start of this, probably, unnecessary post.

No thanks on the 2 bore.  I think I lost a few marbles shooting my 8 bore.

Hmmmm . . . does the phrase "detatched retina" mean anything to you hand-held cannon folks? They ain't fun, and getting them reattached (assuming it even works . . .) ain't any fun either.  Think I'll haul out my .32 and practice squirrel hunting, by golly . . . with a light load. -- paulallen
p.s. Have you seen the TrueTV footage of wannabe-macho Japanese males (with the same mindset of the cannon folks) pulling vehicles via an assemblage of hooker-onners attached to their, well, "male appendages?" What some folks won't do to be able to brag, "Hey, guys, I'm tougher than you is . . ." At the risk of offending some, I have to say, "Get a life, folks." - p.
