MINI CARVING TUTORIAL PART ONE
« on: April 17, 2017, 01:34:50 AM »
A couple of weeks ago I said that I would post a mini carving tutorial.  I will just gave a few basic views of how I carve a design.  There are other ways to carve that work very well, but this is the way that I was taught by Wallas Gussler and John Binins about twenty years ago.

I basically plunge cut the design in with gouges and chisels.  I have a lot of gouges as you will see in my bench top and laying beside my bench.  You can get by with surprisingly few, but more is better.  A good adjustable bench is a must.  I can walk around my bench, tip the gun from side to side, and I have a rest on the end of the bench that can be raised up to rest the but stock on.  One more important thing, a desk light !  Take notice how close I keep my light so that it will show the light across the carving.  Without this light I could carve nothing.

I am going to do this with three or four separate posts.
The first pictures will show how my gouges are lined up in order so that I don't have to go looking for the correct radias.  I will carve the patch box door.
