I have had good success with this company.  http://www.kyantec.com/  I have not used them for a couple of years but they used to advertise from a teaspoon to a truckload.

To make enough to do three  rifle stocks you'll need, at most, 10 ml of nitric acid.  Add 60 ml of water to it and dissolve 3.5 grams of rusty steel, degreased steel wool or whatever.  Because the amount of acid you need is so small, simply ask the local high school chemistry teacher if he will give you some.

Just buy some Aqua Fortis from Track of the Wolf.  Ready made, inexpensive and you don't put yourself in danger from toxic fumes when making your own.

Unless its been changed the AF stain sold by TOW is not true nitrate stain and may not produce the same results in the long term as stain made with nitric acid alone.

If you can find Ferric Nitrate on the WWW it will work just like the ferric nitrate made with nitric acid and is not acidic at all.
Acid content is NOT needed in the stain since the acid is not the staining medium.
If you make you own BE CAREFUL.

I believe the active ingredient in aqua fortis stain is ferric nitrate.
A few years ago, I bought a 125 gram bottle for 9.95 from the Science Company.
Mixed one part ferric nitrate crystals to five parts distilled water (by volume) it produces a traditional stain, albeit not produced in the traditional manner.  One 3 oz dixie cup of crystals and 15 oz of water makes a heck of a lot of stain.
Much handier, in my opinion, than nitric acid.  And unadulterated with other chemicals.

After experimenting with nitric acid and following several different instructions on how to make AQ, I ended up doing the same thing.  Got the same stuff from the Science Company.  Still have a large bottle of nitric and don't know what to do with it!
