Best small touch hole liner
« on: June 12, 2017, 11:00:11 PM »
Getting ready to start a pistol build.

My flats are 1/16" too small to take a 1/4" White Lightning.

I want good fast ignition. Not sure what to do for the touch hole.  Not real big on the thought of internally coming the bore myself.

Any recommendations???

Maybe disregard.  I'm 95% sure I have 5/16" liners in my guns.

I will have to look at the bit I used when I get back home.  The 1/4" might work.

Been using the Treso liners for many years. 1/4x28 thread, 13/16ths barrels and up.

No liner, use the internal coning tool Tom Snyder makes. Same result as a liner, almost no positioning restraints, and looks authentic. Plus faster to accomplish and cheaper.

Does Tom sell them?   Is he a member here?   I've only seen 1 post in my short while here and the user made a tool...I've drilled and installed white lightning liners and like them a lot. But not opposed to other options as long as they work.

My barrel is over 13/16" at the breech. Off the top of my head it's just a smidge under 15/16" at the breech.   Swamped octagon 54cal Hoyt barrel.

I've used the 1/4"x28 Ampco liner that Muzzleloader Builders supply sells, in a 3/4" octagon barrel with good results. The Amp o bronze turns dark with use and looks good with a browned barrel.

Liners are great and 99% of shooters and thus builders prefer them.

Here is an email address for Tom Snyder. See if still good.

Hi,
A 1/4" White lightning liner is just fine. If you get nervous about the liner filling the flat then just chuck the liner in a drill and file the counter sink flange a little smaller. The 1/4" inch works fine for 13/16"-15/15" barrels.

Someone posted (years ago) how to make a small coning tool out of a finish nail. Flatten one end of the nail into a vee shape then sharpen it where it will cut a cone shape when inserted from the inside with shank through the vent hole, then use drill to turn it. Forgot to mention you need to case harden the cutter.
I did this on a 54 cal and it worked well.
