a new old bag and horn

Seeing the new bags that Gary has been working on triggered me to post a picture of a bag and horn set I made last year.  The horn was inspired by one I saw at the Honourable Company of Horners annual meeting at Colonial Williamsburg.  The 10 bands are a result of relief carving the horn between the bands.  They are not applied.  Using only a coping saw, chip carving knife and a file I relieved the area between the bands.  In fact, the entire project was made using only hand tools, that includes the drilling of the spout.  The base plug is walnut with a single flathead screw used to attach the horn strap.  The horn was dyed crimson and the bands were rubbed back to form the contrast.  The bag is made from 3-4 oz vegetable tanned leather and dyed red to match the horn.

That's neat!!Neat contrast between the bands and the horn.Do you have any idea where the original was made?

Dave, only can say is WOW.  Nice hand work for both items.  I really like the idea using an old time screw on the base plug for attaching a strap. 
It takes the right horn to start with to withstand all the cutting and filing.  Nice combo.

Mitch,
All the guy told me was that he found the horn on eBay and thought the horn was from the south.  The original horn was not quite as red but a red hue was evedent throughout its length.

 Wow Dave that horn is really cool. Ten carved bands, what a glutton for punishment ;D  Really, a very nice job, I can appreciate the time and work.

Nice Dave.  The bag and horn set would be perfect for a .25 cal squirrel rifle...my Birthday's in December.
