I'm using 1/32" for a current fowling piece. When using stock this thin, there's got to be more forming and less filing.

My last ones read. 025 to .028 on micrometers. I've used .032 as well.

I am using .040".  I started out years ago using .050 for steel and .062 for brass.  This was what was recommended by the late John Bivins.  Over the years I have progressively honed my inletting skills thus being able to graduate to thinner and thinner material.  Even my patch boxes are made from .040".

I used .050" for the last ones I made.  The filing is pretty deep.

I have both 0.040" & 0.050" sheet brass stock and use either depending on the part I'm making. Most of my patchbox lid & heads are from brass stock 0.050" thick which allow for filing & sanding to final shape and removing any deep scratches/dents. The sides if used are 0.040" thick. 95% of my ramrod thimbles start life from 0.040" thick brass stock.

I use .040. Thin enough to form easily after annealing, thick enough to take some filing. I remember reading once, although I don't recall the source, that most if not all the brass thimbles etc on originals mike out to about .040. Don't know if that is true but it seems to work OK.

A few years ago I came across some old doors with brass kickplates they measured out .040 and have been serving well.
Annealing them burns off the varnish and or paint.
I had some that were .062  but that was a little heavy for most stuff

I'm with Burnt, been using old kick plates for all the years I've built guns. Didn't know the actual thickness. Use the same thing for brass patchboxes. Used the hood off of a buddy's old Bronco for iron mounted guns for years. Don't  know how thick that is though.    Bob
