First schimmel redeaux, NEW PHOTOS ADDED,
« on: July 09, 2017, 02:18:29 AM »
After reshaping the butt stock, I decided to install a "cut off", so I didn't have to strip the whole stock to refinish. Plain maple, lots of patina, 28ga x 48" smoothrifle, modified Siler, Dave Rase barrel inlet, schimmel.  No buttplate, entry pipe.
My first schimmel.

Here's what I came up with.

Ok, braved the elements this morning.  Only in the nineties.

I'd love to post some more pics,  BUT, it was 118 yesterday, 113 today.
I am not going out there!
I've got 2 that I need photos of, just having trouble getting acclimated this year.
Soon, I promise!

That is a great looking little rifle.  The "repair" came out very nice!

Nicely done, Dane, and great looking rifle!  The wrist came out great, and I love the coloring you did with the stock finish.  Stay cool!

There is a lot of character there.  I like it.  What process did you use to finish the stock?  If you don't mind sharing.

Cory,
This was a refinish.  Not too complicated.
Ferric nitrate stain, 3 or 4 coats of Chambers oil, patina added with spar varnish tinted with black and burnt sienna oil paint, then a couple more coats of spar varnish.  When dry, rubbed back and evened out with one more coat of Chambers oil.
Sounds complicated, but the spar dries quickly, (about an hour), so done in a couple of days.

Dane,
I think anything should dry quickly where you live. ;D
Did you make that horn?  The finish on the horn goes well with the rifle.

David,
No, that horn is an Art DeCamp Lehigh horn that I got at Dixons last year.
Purty, huh?
