Christian Hawken Smoothrifle
« on: April 21, 2009, 07:29:41 AM »
My friend Niall Sadler up in Northern Alberta sent these pictures of a rifle he just finsihed recently.  He describes it as a Christian Hawken .54 cal smoothrifle.  I am delighted to see such good work coming from one of my fellow Canucks.

Very attractive rifle?  What is the barrel?  I have thought about making a smooth rifle, started one, screwed up the stock in my relearning curve and have put it on hold.

The epitome of a kentucky rifle- even without grooves in the barrel! Lovely.

I like it!
Bold carving and nicely done from the look of it.

There's going to be an fine original incised carved Christan Hawken coming to library in the near future.

Thanks for the messages and compliments. I will try to answer your all your questions as best I can. Firstly the barrel is a Colerain octagon to round 'C' profile. The lock is a Ditchburn by Stan Hollenbaugh. The patchbox was is an interpretation based on the one shown in Peter Alexander's Gunsmith of Grenville County. The side plate and toe plates are taken from various pictures of Hawken's rifles I have. They have some original work because the pictures I chose to use did not show the engraved details very well. The stock is from GunstocksPlus. The gun has some unique features as I made it specifically for my applications. The rear sight is removeable so I can use it as a fowler or a backup rifle when I go hunting, as a smoothbore for trailwalks and as a shotgun for pidgeon shooting at meets.  It was made in the same caliber as my hunting George Shreyer hunting rifle so I don't have to carry along size balls etc when I go hunting.

@!*%, when the Canadian out-do the Americans on their own rifles, why, why, lemme axe you, is that outrageous or what? I guess the ante is upped, and I'd better get to work!

Really nice looking gun, Niall, and super workmanship.

If you ship it to me, I'll take it to Dixon's Gunmaker's Fair for you. ;D

Niall, Acer isn't kidding.  I'm sending a rifle to him by Canada Post and USPS, so that I can enter it for critique at Dixon's this July.  The feedback one gets there is invaluable.

Beautiful rifle and finely made. Hope that your next gun is in the fashion of George Eister. I believe that you have the talents to do it justice.
Thanks for letting the kids out here have a look at it.
