... IRON GUN FITTINGS

:-\ :-\.... May I assume that the commercial supplier "iron" fittings,... trigger-guard, butt-plate, patchbox, etc., for Tennessee & Southern Mountain Rifles are actually cast steel ...???.... can they be cold bent and modified without breaking, or must they be heated...??

Sand cast or investment cast?  Sand cast ones will snap in a NY minute.  Generally investment cast ones can be cold bent if the bend is minor.

The first and last store bought iron trigger guard I bought broke when I tried to slightly cold bend it.

Snapped right along the mid hand guard rail and it packed quite a stinging wallop to my tender mit that was holding it!

Cades I would use a hand forged one. When you heat them they bend easy. Also to me they look so much better.
Also come over to the table at the CLA show. I'll have a couple with me. That I might part with. Oldtravler

I  cold bend investment cast t-guards all the time. Mostly no problemo, sometimes I probably could have shook my woo-woo stick a couple more times and not broke the guard....

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?
