What to use for a rivet
« on: July 16, 2017, 05:29:12 PM »
I am getting ready to rivet a sterling silver nosecap on my current project.  In the past, when I have made a steel cap I use a steel rivet and on a brass cap a copper rivet.  What should I make this rivet out of?  Should the rivet match the nosecap or would a steel rivet be appropriate?  All my silver inlays are fastened to the stock with silver nails so I am leaning toward a silver rivet.

I you are going for historically correct, I don't know. Personally, I like steel rivets/pins with silver inlays and such. I like the contrast

The problem, if you call it that, is that if the rivet is of a dissimilar metal, ie:  steel, copper or brass, it is going to oxidize to a different hue than if it was of the same metal.  I have some large chunks of silver from which I would make a silver rivet Dave.  If you need a piece, let me know.
Good to hear from you, Cody.

Hi Dave,
I would use a silver rivet for 2 reasons: it will match the nose cap but also being soft, it will peen easier than steel and you have less risk of dimpling the cap at the site of the rivet.

I agree with the silver rivet also and for all the reasons given plus it will just look better in my opinion ;).

I can't imagine you would have considered anything but silver.  ???
