length of breech plug??
« on: August 03, 2017, 08:07:09 PM »
Am nearing the start of another project. a 45 cal 13 / 16" straight barrel.
I have been reading and studying, and hearing talk that "store bought" plugs are sometimes, maybe always, too long??
The threads in the GM barrel and matching plug are 5 / 8" long.
I am reading that 1/2" is the max for best architecture and function?
Do you builders shorten the thread depth to a half inch and the matching plug length??
IS this really noticable, or make a differance if done.
It seems like this might be one of the things that can really make a difference in a guns appearance??
Thanks

I generally end up somewhere between 1/2 and 9/16ths depending on how the plug indexes. good luck with your project.

1/2 inch is what I strive for. This lets you position your lock in proper relation to your breach without threading your touchhole liner into your breach plug. Bob

!/2" is about what most folks want theses days. Many of the original old timey plugs I have seen are closer to 3/8".

Firstly, thanks for moving this from the classifieds where I first posted it.  Afterwards I realized I had it in the wrong catagory.

and also, thanks for the information. I jus wonder how many builders actually shorten that situation?\I am going to do it on this next build as ot is from an "almost" plank and nothing is inlet cept the barrel and RR.

But I again wonder how many precarved stocks especially those with the lock already inlet are done considering this?
Or a stock with a swamped or Oct to Rd barrel?  That pretty much established those locations??

I learn more and more every time I look at this site.  I think this all might be way over my head.
Thanks as always
