Bone Button
« on: August 05, 2017, 03:38:55 PM »
I have a project coming up that, I am thinking about making a bone button release in the toeplate. I`ve seen these on a number of originals from different areas . I know that someone on here has done this before. Any guidance , advise , help , will be appreciated. I plan to make it rectangular.   Thanks. Nate

I remember a Kuntz rifle with a jewel for the button on a toe plate patch box release.  I'm sure the jewel, or in your case, bone button, would simply be glued to the end of the metal push rod.

Art is not an object.  It is the excitement inspired by the object.

Or, you can shape your button like a top-hat and the toe plate will hold it in place - No need for glue and the possibility of losing the button.   ;)

Thanks to both of you for your  responses  . I was thinking about a "shoulder " around the button to help capture it in the toeplate with, just  enough button proud of the toeplate surface to make it look good , not tall and gaudy. Thanks again.   Nate

I also remember a rectangle shaped button on a Kunz rifle in the toe plate. Who's to say there wasn't a shoulder on the outer edge of the button held in place by the toe plate. The one I remember I thought was made of bone.

Hi Nate
If you bevel the edge of your retangled button and bevel the opening in the toe plate you can make the top of the button almost flush with the surface of toe plate and it will
Not come through the toe plate. Make a small hole for the push for in the bottom of the button and you will find this works very well.

Here is what Wallace did on my brothers rifle...  Button is bone.
