I sacrificed an old channel lock that opens wide enough for the spring, ground a fork on one end and an "L" shape on the other to allow the pin that rides inside the coil spring to clear when compressing. It really doesn't take much effort to compress the spring. I do loosen the two screws on the bridle plate first to work the pin and spring out once compressed. Just wear safety glasses in case you have an arthritic moment with your hands.
