I took these pictures before I finished my winter build. Only one rifle this year because of my lock projects.
I wanted something different for this build so I went with a half stock flint. The wrist carving was fun and very easy so I recorded it.
I used pin stripe tape to lay out the carving, 1/8" for the borders and 1/4" for the squares. The tape was laid on in alternate stripsand this was probably the most difficult part. After all the tape was lined uf, I stab cut each square and removed the narrow strips. The squares were cleaned up and then I peeled all of the tape off.
Each square was chipped to form a pyramid and a narrow border was cut with a small gouge. just before I finished the stock, I decided to add nails to the center of each square, but the stock is wet right now so you will have to wait another day or so to see the final effect.

Clint, I've checkered and carved low relief on many a long gun, and your chip carving is wonderful to see!  What a great and innovative design!.  The workmanship is nicely done.

Maybe you can make up some fine silver nails,  Just heat the end of some 20 to 22 ga wire, it will form a wee little ball end.  Then use a diagonal cut to correct length.  You can use the head as-is, or have a chamfered hole to make the head different. Pre-drill the nail holes.

This rifle was inspired by the stock itself. It was a halfstock which came out of a local log and had perfect grain through the wrist. I didn't want a steel fore stock rib so I made one out of copper. It was bent around a wood form ant the pipes were silver soldered into it. The rib was then soldered onto the barrel which is .36 x 36 " x 13/16. 
I made the lock last summer but bought the butt plate and trigger guard because my casting sand was misbehaving and time was ticking away. The patch box is not ordinary but it is what it is. Here are the fun pictures. CW image posting
