Carlson triggerguard
« on: August 23, 2017, 04:26:11 PM »
OldTraveler61 had a trigger guard at the ALR gathering that I identified as one by Myron Carlson,
who was a highly regarded maker of Tennessee rifle furniture. I believe Myron passed away about 2004.
I'm sure some of the longtime builders have a lot more info. Mike, I thought you would like to see more
of Carlson's work.

In the early 1980s I purchased a full set of early Bean style furniture from Myron (I think) at Friendship.

Patchbox, sideplate & toe plate

trigger guard

butt plate

nose cap

About 20 years later I finally got around to assembling my first rifle and used the Carlson parts along with an
antique flintlock I had picked up somewhere. The following two pix show most of the Carlson parts on the
finished rifle.

All the best
Paul

Paul, one of our clubs longtime builders passed away several years ago, and I was able to purchase some of his plunder, including buttplate, and 2 trigg guards nearly identical to yours, maybe even the patchbox. I built an iron mtd rifle for another member with the parts, and used the remaining guard on my recent SMR. I remember the name was stamped on the plate and 1 guard . Our member probably gathered them up in the 90's. Thanks, swell looking SMR fo sho.  Dave F 8)

I also bought an identical buttplate from one of the guys on here from Montana. Both pieces of buttplate joined by a steel rivet before brazing, and as I recall,so was the one I used on the rifle I built. Now I know who made the parts. member made many trips to Friendship, and more as like that's where he got the parts, likely from Mr Carlson.
As I recall, that buttplate is a REAL BEAR to inlet, but sure looks good.
Now to find a suitable guard to go with buttplate-------it never ends til we do. hahaha Dave 8)

I got to use a lot of Myron's parts over the years, I wish I still had a 5 gallon bucket of them left. I have only two sets left, an Ambrose Lawing set, and a weird set that is only marked "VA". I plan to build a squirrel rifle around the  Lawing set  for myself so I'll have a little bit of Myron with me when I go  squirrel hunting! I'll be doing some brass castings from  the "VA" set, They look like Bear Creek School NC to me. :o
I was in his shop a couple times in Dixon ILL a couple times. I was always amazed with his triggers, he'd make set triggers from scratch and only charge $40 for them, he figured he made about a buck an hour making them...never could figure that out. He had a booth at F-ship forever.

Mike, did he mark his triggers? I had a set from somewhere that I couldn't identify. Dave 8)

I have never seen anything marked with a stamp from Myron. All parts were marked with some kind of white grease pencil to mark what they were and when they were made.

Mike,
I would like to see the VA set might want to order some when you have them cast.

Dave - You recall correctly. That butt plate was a "Bear", especially for my first rifle.
