Cherry Fowler And Issac Berlin Smoothie
« on: May 28, 2009, 03:19:39 AM »
This is my first attempt at posting pictures by myself, I truely don't think they're gonna work, but I'll keep trying.
The Cherry Fowler was A Chambers PA kit in left hand. A 46" 1" breech Swamped Longhammock barrel. The Siler lock and Barrel were my first try at Bleach etching. The cherry stock was stained with nut brown stain, and finished with Chambers oil finish. The stock was difficult to relief carve for there were alot of tear aways and chips that broke off. The thumb piece is a John Harm design accented by silver wire. The incised carving is a Melchoir Fordney design from The Grinslade Fowler book KF 27.The fern designs were from other guns in the book. The engraving is by our own Acer.
The Issac Berlin smoothie was from a blank I bought in '94. The barrel was made by Don Getz, 1 1/8" breech oct. to round tapered 42" barrel, which features a wedding band transition to 16 flats with another wedding band, then round to the muzzle. The lock is a English Chambers lock. Aqua fortis stain, with something else over that (don't remember), followed by Chambers oil finish. The furniture was modified to somewhat match the plan.

George, congrats on a real nice looking fowler. Wow, did this come together nicely, in your carving, wire inlay and coloring and finish!  This gun has to be shouldered, let me tell you. I found this gun to be very light and to handle beautifully. So glad to see how you finishged it up George. You must be proud of yourself.

Looking pretty good. I thought the barrel needed polishing to get rid of those nasty stains.

George, you've done well to capture the charm of the piece.  Your gun reminds me of an old friend.  Carving cherry is tricky and you carried it off well.

May I make a suggestion for your next wire inlay project?  After you have drawn and cut the line, and the ribbon of silver, try tapering the last 1/4" of the ribbon, so that it fades out at the tip.  It doesn't have to come to a point, and the wood will swell again to tightly hold it in, but it'll make the design less harsh, softening the tips of the tendrils.

All in all, a nicely made and decorated piece.

Very sweet gun George, I like it, it's got charm as Taylor said.  Cherry can be a pain to carve, always have to check where the grain is running, and even scrapers are sometimes not enough for background cleanup.  That's when I get a set of fine files out.

Did you reshape the siler cock, it looks slimmer. Maybe I'm just imagining things because it's on the wrong side of the gun?  Thanks for sharing!

Eric, I reshaped the cock some. I didn't like the forward "hump" on the cock, it didn't seem to flow right. Other than that, it's a regular Siler.   ...Geo.

George,  Nice guns!!  A cherry fowler in 12 Ga. is my next build. I hope it comes out as nice as yours.  I've never done a fowler before.
