Wood patch boxes
« on: July 03, 2018, 06:22:42 AM »
For folks that never tackled the job before. I made myself a scraper of sorts to make the job easier and faster. Its a simple wood body with handles on each side and a cutter made with the angle for the dovetail. I'm sure others have made better ones but this took me about thirty minutes to make and has saved me lots of time matching box and stock dovetails together.

I was just thinking of something like that.  I thought I saw one elsewhere before....for sale..but I can't find it.

Seeing that, even I may be able to make something similar...I may have to give it a try.  I appreciate you sharing!

The one I saw was more complex and above my capabilities.

Brilliant! I plan to make one. How thick is the scraper/blade, please?

Thanks

I think the blade is a 1/4". The only problem is it works just one way. You go up one side and down the other which can be problematic if the grain isn't running right. It still works but you have to be more careful. It could be much improved but I was in a hurry and it well enough for me.

Boy, every time I open a post I find another tool or gadget to make...is this a wonderful hobby or what?  Thanks for the idea, Brian!

For folks that never tackled the job before.....

Brian,

That would be me, so I'm gonna ask a dumb question.  Do you use your tool to also cut the corresponding dovetails on the lid?  Thanks for posting pictures of your tool.

MBS does sell one... actually somewhat similar to the one the OP made except the cutter is in metal, not wood.

You have to email or call as it's not on their website.

I'm betting someone read this post and also emailed them...sorry, I was first. Lol.  I have the last one in stock being shipped out Monday...price was very reasonable and probably better than I could make one.

Yep, I cut both sets of dovetails with it.
