Unfortuate Start to Horn Making
« on: August 29, 2017, 07:34:10 PM »
It doesn't pay to start out making your first horn at 11:30PM when you're tired.  ;D I put the wire into the horn to measure the opening. Transferred the measurement to the outside of the horn and marked it. Then proceeded to saw the tip off at that mark! I forgot to make another mark a short distance away for the real cut. Good thing I bought more than one horn.

Sounds like you were planning for a turned tip-style horn. That will explain the lathe purchase.

Yeah, I will put this horn aside until I learn how to make a Philadelphia screw-tip horn. And get over the lessons learned about NOT turning out of balance pieces!

Ray, All is not lost, the horn is still useable. Take a small horn and fit it over the larger body as below and pin it in place. For something different use a Thimble as a tip.

Tim it always amazes me. How you can turn what most of us would throw away because of a goof up.
But you intern make a great piece out of it. Well done...! Oldtravler
