Stud for Knife Sheath?
« on: October 01, 2017, 02:56:13 PM »
I need to make a stud for a strap to catch on a knife sheath. Knife has a double guard. Thinking these are nothing more than the stud riveted through the leather with a washer on the inside.similar to this... http://www.wickellerbe.com/gallery/index.php?action=showfull&vpic=80&gll=1&tpic=32&maxp=71
Any advice? Photos?

Yes.
I used brass rod, brass sheet and a brass bead - soldered it all together and shaped it with files while it was spinning in my drill.

Tandy Leather has them in several sizes, some that are attached with a washer and some with a screw attachment. They also come in brass and silver. Good luck on your knife sheath.

 Easy to make if you have a lathe, even a wood lathe with a Morse tapper and a Jacobs chuck. Keep the Brass annealed and you can use you wood tuning tools on it.
 You may want to think about lining the inside with leather to cover the peened over edge and washer.

Although an advocate of trying to make everything, it is too easy to buy something like that especially when the little thieticle has not changed much over several centuries.  When you attache it, keep an eye out for a couple of things;

watch the base part so it does not scrape your knife ( or pistol) when you draw it out.  Metal studs have a tendency to do that.

Also...and obviously...you have to put this in place before you do your stitching, so you gotta estimate where it's gonna go.  Leave a little extra on the strap.

Lastly, the hole in the strap will be basically a hole punch and slit.  Try not to make them any bigger than is necessary else they will come undone on the trail.

Don't shoot yore eye out, kid
