Half-stock fantasy gun....
« on: July 18, 2017, 08:55:04 PM »
I built this for my 19 year old son.  It's nothing special, but in many/most ways I'm very happy with it.  I recognize my limitations, but it was a labor of love and I'm happy with it (hey, I'm honest and I stink at this compared to some of you).  What pleases me the most is the fact that my son has been somewhere between ambivalence and total avoidance when it came to hunting and he now claims that he wants to pursue deer this fall and I'm hopeful that the rifle may have played some role in that.

Nothing really to report, you can see what it is (again, total fantasy gun), but it's a .45 Colerain slow-twist 13/16, 38" barrel with set triggers.

Nothing wrong with that, very nice job. Is that one of L&R's "replacement" locks?

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

Thanks for the kind comments.  Some of the folks on this board have mad gun-building skills and I consider the comments to be real compliments.

Yes Mike, L&R replacement lock.

Gangreen , Good Job!!  High art , collector`s guns are nice , we all like to see them , but, this rifle you have here , is the bread and butter of the sport. Functional , beautiful , nice lines , clean work, you have done well!!!  Be proud.        Nate

He'll probably keep that rifle for the rest of his life.  Good job!

Thanks everyone.  I'm beyond thrilled that my son is looking forward to hunting with the rifle given that he's 19 and has shown almost zero interest in hunting previously.  If he bags one, I'll surely post a photo.

It shoots well Taco.  My son has done some flintlock shooting in the past, but he had literally probably fired less than 10 rounds in his life from a flint gun and I figured it would be a steep learning curve for him.  He's a natural athlete and a good shot and he had zero issue getting used to it and now shoots a sub 1" group at 25 yards and often lays them in on top of each other.  At 50 yards his group opens up some (understandably), but it's still easily minute of deer.

Always nice to see the youngsters getting off their electronic devices and out in the woods. The fact that he's doing it with a rifle his dad built is an added plus. Good luck to your son and you this season.  Rick.
