Waterlox for stock finish?
« on: February 24, 2017, 11:29:05 AM »
I believe Buchle recommended Waterlox as a sealer prior to the final finish in the early printings of "Recreating The American Long Rifle"  I didn't see it in the later copy I have. Is anyone using it and which formula?

Waterlox is a great finish, although mabe just a bit glossy, even in the satin grade. I like to cut the gloss back using a green or red Scotchbrite pad soaked in Johnson's paste wax. just a good rub out , then wipe it all of and lightly polish the resulting sheen with a soft clean rag. the Johnson's works more as a lubricant for the Scotchbrite pad, than anything else.  most anything I finish, whether rubbed or built up poly or lacquer, gets this as a final treatment

Here is a blog post on original Waterlox:
"SEPT 1, 2015 UPDATE: This blog post was written in 2010. Waterlox changed their formula. I no longer use and recommend this product. I’m still researching to find a great replacement. ~ Allan Little"

And I bet they're marketing it as "New and Improved!".  My late mother said that anything something was "new and improved" it was as good as ruined.

According to their statement versus traditional finish,  the only major difference was, is the film finish is harder, and a lower gloss, or sheen...?..??

I used it ONCE on a stock and it had a "bluish" tint. I find for me there are better finishes out there.
