Textured hawk handles
« on: October 11, 2017, 04:55:31 AM »
Anyone know of any grooving, carving or other texturing of hawk handles in the 18th century.     I saw a nice handle years ago in Muzzleloader magazine that was grooved and I think in Last of the Mohicans, Magua carried a grooved hawk but is there any documentation of this.   Thanks.

Hawk handles are disposable. Why bother?

There are working tomahawks basically trade axes, fancy pipe tomahawks which seem mostly for show, and spike tomahawks for war. I’ve seen spike tomahawks with a hole and lanyard to keep it in the hand (I assume). Also have seen a swelling at the end of the handle to keep the hand from slipping off. But that requires using a wedge to secure the head.

Branding the haft with a hot file was a common technique.

Take a look at this site, you will have to look around and look close but you will see some hafts with decoration.

Thanks guy's and thank you Mr. Crosby enough information to keep me busy for awhile.   I make my own replacement handles from ash or white oak so might have to do a little carving or shaping just to be a bit better. but want to stay HC as well.

Here are some more examples to examine, if you can get it to work correctly: https://archive.org/details/americanindiant00pete
