Three Year Project Finished!

A year and a half ago or so I posted the pictures of the Hawken I built. You folks were very kind in responding. I acknowledged all the people that helped in that post. I then wanted to build an old fashioned storage box. It has taken a year and a half (I work slow and not steady). I finally found the walnut at www.woodnshop.net. The main panels are 3/8", the edge pieces are 3/4" and the divider pieces are 1/4". I had to buy a cheap table saw to build this. All the little plugs are really covering a small screw. I wanted to make it look like I was trying to hide the plugs but I really wanted them to stand out. The grain in the walnut really stands out in person. The one thing I really was kinda disappointed in was the latches. I spent at least 10-20 hours searching for a high quality latch (solid brass) that was more period correct. The best I found from Rocklers when received was cheap steel with a light brass plate. Really cheap looking. I hope you will give me a break on declaring myself a "gunsmith" which I am not. Looks like a beautiful case for a beautiful rifle.  Yes, the latches do look a bit out of place, so why not make your own?  If you are capable of making the case and rifle so well, I am sure you are capable of doing the latches.  Thanks for letting us see it.

What a joy!

The latches are not a problem- Leaving it as it is just means that there is less likely hood of some little munchkin getting into it and using up all your caps or worse. No they wont stop a thief from carrying it away but they will slow down a grand kid or nieghbour- heck it probabley wont stop them for too long but at least they will learn something about methodical persistence as they patiently work thru the combination.   If you go for different latches maybe consider incorporating one of the Hidden Patchbox release mechanisms that are so cool and so Period correct.

Beautiful kit. Certain to be a family heirloom for generations to come. Excellent craftsmanship on both the rifle and the case.

I like your case.

If you do another one,  I was able to find latches that I like and also the sliding clasp that is keyed not a modern one with a combination.

I also used a leather handle that I thought was good for the project.

I have a walnut box sitting in my shop that I need to put felt in. 

You need to bring your rifle to the shoot at my place next year in southern Iowa and show it off.

Fleener, Those are the kind I wanted. They look very similar to ones I bought from Rocklers. The Rockler ones I received were steel with a light flash of brass plate. That exactly is what I was looking for in solid brass or just real solid and high quality. Thanks, Dan

Beautiful case!!  Is it safe to store the Stock without the barrel in the channel?

Thank You Rolf. I don't know if storing the barrel out of the stock is bad or not. I would be more worried about a fullstock. I do have a large ( 2" x 3" x 1/2") desiccant device in the case to keep out humidity. Dan

Did you use archive/preservation quality felt? BEWARE that there is a ton of cheap stuff on the market that has an acid in it and it will attack metals ...

All of my muzzleloaders will shoot into one ragged hole ALL DAY LONG ... it's just the 2nd or 3rd & other shots that tend to open up my groups ... !

I am not sure but this is the best quality that Rocklers sells. Very thick and easy to use. It is actually velvet and not felt. They say it is fine for fine jewelry cases. I sure hope it is OK. Dan
