Engraving Historic Firearms
« on: January 21, 2018, 09:08:22 AM »
I just got a copy of Engraving Historic Firearms by John Schippers. Purchased from the Lindsay Engraving website. I am pretty new to engraving and looking for anything I can find to learn more. This book is by far the best I have seen yet. There are thousands of photos of many very nicely engraved guns. Most importantly there is detailed explanation how each was engraved. If you are doing engraving or thinking about giving it a try, this is a book to get. The price tag is pretty scary, but it is worth every penny. Glad that I got it.

Agree, Bill, it is an excellent book.  The explanation, and drawings of the various cuts, and how you do them, is extremely informative, and well worth the price.  My only caution is that John has his own style, which is very attractive in its own right, but not exactly "historically correct".  That's not a knock on John, but something to consider if you care about such things.  Again, totally agree it's a wonderful book.

I agree with Ed, that book is great for ideas, how to's and very inspirational. Old originals can run anywhere from really fantastic to just downright coarse. I think you'd be surprised if you got a hold of some KRA disc's to view the engravings.

When I am at the Log Cabin and something old and neat shows up, I get a great chance to handle and view what comes in. I think I've got some pictures saved on my phone, if I can figure out how to transfer them I will and post them so that you can see what Ed is saying.
