Tobacco jars

GA Turner's post reminded me of tobacco boxes I made earlier this year as part of some pipe stand projects.
This one is made from walnut and horn. The base is maple:





The tamper is turned from horn and brass:



This one is turned from cherry. The center section of the box and top of the base are painted to resemble stoneware:





The tamper was turned from cherry and brass:

Great looking jars. I like them. When you turn horn, do you turn the horn as fast or slower than the wood you turn?

I turn horn at the same speed as wood. If tuning a big piece to make a jar I start with a roughing gouge then a spindle gouge or round nose scraper. I finish with sandpaper, then auto rubbing compound.

There is a lot to like with this project, but I really like the lettering.  I reckon that is because I can’t do lettering worth anything and admire seeing it so nicely done.
