Barrel pin drilling jig
« on: December 24, 2017, 08:02:54 PM »
I'm buying my own Christmas presents ;)!  I've been looking at the barrel pin drilling jigs sold by a lot of the suppliers and wonder if they are really useful.  It looks to me that finding your center line might be difficult through those little holes, and different sizes of underlugs might be a problem.  Anyone use one?

haven't used one myself. I thought about trying one but decided against it because the jig limits where the holes go. I purchased the drill jig made by Dave Race, witch will work on any hole.

I also got one from Dave Rase. Comes with attachments and long bits for 1/16 and 3/32 diameter pin holes, can also be used for lock bolt or tang holes by drilling a small pilot hole. Works very well!

I used one similar to Dave's.It worked great for me,did lock bolts, tang bolts, thimble pins, pilot holes for keys.I did alter mine abit, had a buddy turn down the ends to the exact size of the thimble pins to avoid dimples in the wood.Be sure to work it from both sides too.If you don't have a drill press, one of these and a hand drill will get the job done.It does work better on flat, square stocks before its shaped.Pre carved stocks will reguire a little more care to keep the jig from moving because you don't want to crank it down to tight to cause deep dimples.

Sound like it is a more complete system than that offered by DGW??

You can search this forum for David Rase and Tom Snyder drill jig to find lots of information on these tools. I have one from each maker and use them both on my builds. I get perfectly drilled holes every time and they give me much confidence to get the job done right with no sweating.

Here is a photo of my drill fixture being used to drill barrel pins. My fixture will align and drill both barrel pin as well as lock and tang bolts.  Sitting on the bench below the stock blank is the bushing/guide and drill bit for the lock and tang bolts.

Roger,

I got one of Dave Rase's drilling weasels a couple of years ago and I have been delighted with the results.  They are worth twice what he charges.  You won't be sorry!
