Correct mold for "Santa Fe" Hawken?
« on: March 23, 2017, 06:09:27 AM »
I have a Uberti "Santa Fe" Hawken in the odd .53 caliber. I recently obtained a Lee .527 mold from a forum member(thanks Kermit!). I bought it because as far as I know Lee doesn't make this size mold any more, I figured I should get it while I can and it seemed like there's a decent chance it will work. But I don't really know if it will work. So has anybody ever used this mold with the "Santa Fe" Hawken?

I had a Lyman .526" mould that cast great lead for mine.  Lee .527" should be fine.  Nice and tight.

My .54 Flint Pistol has a piece of one of those barrels on it.  I use a .526" ball and .018" denim patch with 55gr. 3F.  This load shoots well. Any less powder opens groups due to the 60" or 66" rate of  twist.

I have a Santa Fe Hawken with the notorious fifty three caliber bore. I use a palmetto armory .520 mold. My patching is is about twenty thousandths linen napkins from the thrift store. Shoot better than I do on most days.

If you want to try a smaller diameter make a sizing die.

I also have a fifty-three caliber Sante Fe Hawken and a Palmetto Cal 52 steel mold, both bought at TOtW in the 1980's. The mold casts a 0.520" ball using my alloy: 98% lead (by volume, the ball weighs 98% of a pure lead ball).

The mold is a 2 cavity, fits Lyman handles, the cardboard box marked "REF. 520113" and "Italy." Although I purchased the rifle and mold at the same time, I know nothing about the name Palmetto and I've not seen any for sale since I bought the rifle. I'd be interested if anyone on this Forum knows the history of this item.

I have a .520 Palmetto mold that I use for my Santa Fe Hawken. It throws a nice ball, that is just about perfect for my gun. I can't imagine a ball much larger than that being even remotely easy to load.

Just wanted to update this thread in case anybody is ever searching for information on molds for the Uberti/Western Arms "Santa Fe" Hawken. I finally got around to casting some balls from the Lee .527 mold. They load easy with a .012 patch. I did not try to work up a load. Just took a few shots with my regular target load of 60 grains 3F and they seem to shoot fine. I think the Lee .527 is a good mold to have for the "Santa Fe" Hawken.

I use a .684 Palmetto mould for my 14 bore Sporting rifle. I purchased the mould back in 1986.  This is a well made cast iron mould, virtually identical to Lyman moulds. If the Name Palmetto was not on the blocks, you would think it was a Lyman mould.
