Updated pictures from barrel rifling
« on: October 03, 2017, 12:47:44 AM »
This is an extension of my barrel rifling topic, latest pictures since rifling the barrel. 1973 Bob Roller lock and triggers.... 1973!!!! Ha! I was still a few years away from being born. Anyway I changed out and put a larger hammer on the lock. Hook breech and patchbox are Art Russels from the Hawken Shop. As you can see at the front of the comb I have a bad spot of wood that even after finishing shaping will not come out so need to address that at some point.

your Plains rifle is coming along fine, looks good. I would not worry about that blemish on the comb, in my opinion it just adds character, and when you stain the stock it will diminish into the background so to speak.

Mark Brier has beyond any doubt inherited his grandfather Tom Dawson's ability
and love of craftsmanship. My lock and triggers from 1973. I am very glad to see
these new/old parts put into use on this project.

Hi Mark:  This is a great project and a fine use of these parts.  I would not worry about the beauty spot.  If it is soft, wait til it is stained and then flood it with CA.  that will harden or plasticize the spot, and after finishing, will likely disappear.
I'm anxious to see how you proceed with the stock architecture"  From these images, it appears to me that about 1/8" will have to come off the comb at the wrist end to make the heel to comb line flat:  as it is now it appears that the forward part of the butt plate extension is sunken below the plane of the comb.  I know you are a long way from finished, so the following is likely redundant.  Presuming the trigger plate is in the centre of the stock, some wood needs to be removed from the off side to even things out.  Also, the lock panel could use some sculpturing, beginning with the lock plate forward of the snail.  I suspect that these observations are superfluous, but thought I'd mention them now anyway.

Yes the stock is still oversized by a mile just roughed the shape in to get it in the ballpark and have better perspective.

You are well on your way to producing a rifle to be proud of. Depending on the tone of the stain you use, that dark spot may not be noticeable.

Mountain man, I got the rifle sighted in but it is not finished yet. I have a few rifles out in the shop that are at that stage of just needing finished. Unfortunately shutdown work for me this time of year has me very busy, along with winter farm life and tending livestock. My days start in the dark and end in the dark.

Getting a little more time freed up and trying to finish projects up. Still have a little more stock finishing to do. Need to finish the hammer and screw and the barrel. Then antique at some point in time.
