touch hole liner advice?
« on: January 29, 2018, 01:25:58 AM »
I took on a little chore for a friend of changing his percussion rifle over to flint.
Took out the drum and it is a 5/15 X 24 thread which I might even have already and if not TOW does.
The trouble is the hole will be too high above the pan.
I was thinking I could make one from a stud or bolt but there would be no collar on it to stop it from going clear thru.
Anybody know if I can buy one somewhere with no vent in it yet?
Or maybe someone can make one or has an idea???
This should be a piece of cake for you guys??

There was an old thread (I couldn’t find it) where a touch hole was made using a stainless steel partial threaded bolt. On the bolt where the threads end there is a small shoulder that would seat in your countersink. Here’s a picture to help.

Thanks guys,
I had thought of the bolt shoulder idea.  Actually I gotta go to town today and I'm gonna try and get a stainless bolt.
These original style build LR's need that shoulder to stop the liner.
I might get a nut also and chamfer one side, then peen the cut off bolt into a flare to match the barrel.
I don't wanna peen it much when in thebarrel.
Thanks again

I just did some close measuring and checked out the problem a little better.
Seems it looks some worse than it really is.
From the top of the pan to the center of taped hole for the drum / liner, is right on 1/16".
It might work fine with a store bought vent, as long as the hole is not visable when the pan is closed and it should not be at only 1/16".
Any opinions??
I welcome them, I sure aint no expert or gunsmith.

I make touchhole liners out of 3/8" stainless, (If barrel flat will take them)
If the right amount is threaded, they run up against a shoulder like a bought one does.  For threading stainless, try dish -soap. Cuts smoother than cutting oil.
With a big liner like that, you could drill it out on an angle or otherwise move the hole and still have plenty of room to drill it out larger on the inside.

Good luck whatever you do!

Personal preference; I like plain steel that blends better with the barrel for guns based on originals.

Even if the hole is partially visible it won't affect the function.

Rich,

Stainless is not far off platinum in colour but a bit cheaper.  :-)

Yes, I know the latter wasn't used on Longrifles.

Best regards,

I default to lower rather than higher, but the location is somewhat forgiving...

Cheap to find out, my guess is it will work fine.  I'd use the regular thread (not white lightning) internally coned one from TOW and drill the hole out to a bit under 1/16".  If you get the slotted version to try first, you'll know for sure how well it will work or not!

I use 1/4" x 28 stainless all thread to make odd balls like that.

Back to this.
I got a liner from TOW and fit it.
Please take a look at the attached photos and tell me if ya think it is just too high?
This gun will be used for bench shooting or trail walks.  Not hunting.
I am inclined to let it be tried just to see how well it works before trying to make one with a lower hole.
Thanks

That is just about what mine was like. We (Taylor and I, mostly Taylor lol) made a new liner with angled hole, hollowed out from the inside - worked perfectly!

I’m sure it will fire. Just don’t hold it near the fire.

I don't have any 40 cal balls.  I suppose I could fire some blanks and see how quick it is??
Even if it works fine, I just don't like how it looks.

I think if it works, you'll forget about the looks in a month or two...I bet it works!

The holes in those liners are sometimes a bit small, so don't give up on it until you've tried opening it up to 1/16" or a touch less.  That is the best part about those slotted ones for testing, easy to pull, tweak and replace.
